Bayesian Inference for a Covariance Matrix

چکیده
Covariance matrix estimation arises in multivariate problems including multivariate normal sampling models and regression models where random effects are jointly mod-eled, e.g. random-intercept, random-slope models. A Bayesian analysis of these problems requires a prior on the covariance matrix. Here we compare an inverse Wishart, scaled inverse Wishart, hierarchical inverse Wishart, and a separation strategy as possible priors for the covariance matrix. We evaluate these priors through a simulation study and application to a real data set. Generally all priors work well with the exception of the inverse Wishart when the true variance is small relative to prior mean. In this case, the posterior for the variance is biased toward larger values and the correlation is biased toward zero. This bias persists even for large sample sizes and therefore caution should be used when using the inverse Wishart prior.

A Bayesian Factorised Covariance Model for Image Analysis
This paper presents a specialised Bayesian model for analysing the covariance of data that are observed in the form of matrices, which is particularly suitable for images. Compared to existing generalpurpose covariance learning techniques, we exploit the fact that the variables are organised as an array with two sets of ordered indexes, which induces innate relationship between the variables. متن کاملAn Efficient Bayesian Optimal Design for Logistic Model
Consider a Bayesian optimal design with many support points which poses the problem of collecting data with a few number of observations at each design point. Under such a scenario the asymptotic property of using Fisher information matrix for approximating the covariance matrix of posterior ML estimators might be doubtful. We suggest to use Bhattcharyya matrix in deriving the information matri...
متن کاملInferring the eigenvalues of covariance matricesfrom limited , noisy
The eigenvalue spectrum of covariance matrices is of central importance to a number of data analysis techniques. Usually the sample covariance matrix is constructed from a limited number of noisy samples. We describe a method of inferring the true eigenvalue spectrum from the sample spectrum. Results of Silverstein which characterise the eigenvalue spectrum of the noise covariance matrix and in...
متن کاملA Metropolis-Hastings algorithm for reduced rank covariance matrices with application to Bayesian factor models
Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithms for Bayesian factor models are generally parametrized in terms of the loading matrix and the latent common factors which are sampled into two separate blocks. In this paper, we propose a novel implementation of the MCMC algorithm that is designed for the model parametrized in terms of the reduced rank covariance matrix underlying the factor model. Henc...
متن کاملAn efficient technique for Bayesian modeling of family data using the BUGS software
Linear mixed models have become a popular tool to analyze continuous data from family-based designs by using random effects that model the correlation of subjects from the same family. However, mixed models for family data are challenging to implement with the BUGS (Bayesian inference Using Gibbs Sampling) software because of the high-dimensional covariance matrix of the random effects. This pa...
